A cross-platform reader for Slashdot. Slashhack is written on top of Mozilla, and should run without modification on any platform which Mozilla supports.
Several existing desktop application projects on sourceforge.net read the front-page stories from slashdot, or read other bits-and-pieces of the site. Slashhack aims to be a full-featured custom front-end for Slashdot. It will provide navigation and control which is not possible (or very difficult) on a simple web page.
Slashhack is written entirely in XUL and Javascript. By using the MPL license, it is fully compatible with Mozilla itself and binary distributions can be created without issue.
At first glance, this app may seem frivolous until you peek a little deeper:
- There is a generic mechanism used throughout the app for transforming an arbitrary web page into structured RDF data. This may be useful for authors of other web-enabled desktop applications.
- No other software does anything like this.
- The architecture of the app allows for plug-ins for additional items such as spell-check.
- A good start has been made, and the app is partially usable. (CVS access only for now)

you need to know regarding XUL. CSS is also required.
Software engineer:
DOM/XUL/Javascript essential. DOM+Javascript may be acceptable,
but you'd have some catching-up to do first. See the XUL planet
tutorial listed above if you'd like to check it out.
